Walt Disney Characters
Disney characters were the very first Diener erasers. When pencils didn’t sell well at his newly opened theme park, Walt Disney called his friend William Diener, a plastics engineer who suggested adding pencil-top erasers shaped like Mickey Mouse and the gang. They were such a huge hit that Diener spent the rest of his life making erasers based on Disney cartoons and many other sources. Over the decades Diener created Disney erasers in a dizzying array of sizes, shapes, colors and paint styles. A favorite of collectors is the “Disney-Ettes,” a set of five full-bodied erasers in a clear plastic box that was sold only at Disney theme parks. Disneyland is where dreams come true, and that was certainly true for Diener and his eraser empire.
